Kelly Cummins, Experienced Copywriter and Storyteller
So, what’s my story? Copywriter. Poet. Features writer. English literature graduate. PR maven. Press officer. Trainee journalist. Marketing executive. Sales assistant. Product manager. Editor. Researcher. Librarian. Publishing colleague. Creative lead. Award winner.
All the characters I’ve played in my career so far have made me into the dynamic storyteller, writer – and woman - I am today. I’ve worked with well-known brands such as Macmillan Publishers, The AA, Gas Safe Register and Lush, as well as within a marketing agency on a variety of SME accounts from sectors including beauty, wellbeing, recruitment, charity, fashion, technology, security, fulfilment, logistics, and pharmaceuticals.
The stories I’ve researched and written have been used in a multitude of ways, and have appeared in local, national and trade press, as well as on BBC TV and radio, ITV, and Channel 4. I’ve also led storytelling workshops for field-based teams to help gather material for PR and marketing campaigns.
When we work together, you’ll benefit from the real-world insight, sound judgement and strategic mindset that my career has imprinted on me, as well as the depth and breadth of my experience as a professional writer.
Professional Training
I’m currently enhancing my knowledge of strategic branding and communication with further study into brand storytelling for audience engagement at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London).
My professional training also includes copywriting, editing, marketing, PR, journalism and media training courses with The Chartered Institute of Public Relations, The Guardian, The National Council for The Training of Journalists, and City Lit, among others.
For many years, I have studied creative writing and poetry with The Poetry School and The Poetry Society, which allows me to approach every sentence with added flair. I also have a BA Honours degree in English Literature.
ProCopywriters, the UK’s largest professional association of commercial writers, and I am a registered member.
Creativity, Curiosity, Imagination – and Nordic Roots
My bright ideas are grounded by solid deadline management skills and outstanding attention to detail.
A calm and empathetic nature means I communicate and collaborate with ease, building the relationships that support insightful story research.
I’m half Finnish, so I also have a lot of ‘sisu’ (quiet determination) when it comes to getting to the beating heart of a story. I think small talk is, well, just that – small. I love asking the deep questions that lead to the big headlines, because that’s what gets brands noticed.
When I’m not writing, my Nordic sensibilities lead me into nature, the wildest story there is. Or, into art galleries and bookshops, where I’m forever reminded of the essential human need to express ourselves, and how the stories we share have the power to connect us all.
